Frequently Asked Questions

What does F1 and F2 mean?

F1 hybrid is a term used in genetics and selective breedings. F1 stands for Filial 1, the first filial generation of animal offspring resulting from a cross-mating of distinctly different parental types. In our case a pure wolf and a dog pairing would be a F1. For each generation removed from its pure parent a number is added.

If my county is legal but my city is not, can I own a wolfdog there?

No. In situations like these the city law supercedes the county law so it is illegal to hardbor a wolfdog in that city EVEN IF the county is legal.

Is my wolfdog a hybrid?

Yes and no. While most wolfdog owners will refer to their animals as ‘Wolfdogs’ the state does not make a distinction between a wolfdog (meaning multi-generational) and a wolf-hybrid (meaning F1). Most ordinances will refer to wolfdogs as wolf-hybrids in most state/city/county ordinances. UNLESS the legislation defines wolfdog and wolf-hybrid as separate things.

What is a low, mid, and high content wolfdog?

This is still an ongoing discussion among the community but generally it looks like this:
Low content wolfdog = 1%-49% Wolf
Mid content wolfdog =50%-84% Wolf
High content wolfdog = 85%-99% Wolf

*Upper mid content =75%-84% (This is referenced in some counties) Wolf
